  • Research in my laboratory is centered around lipid transfer in chicks from hens at various stages of production. Presently, we are using a state-of-the-art kinetic techniques which allows us to monitor precisely the differences exhibited in egg parameters between different aged flocks and species.
  • Our goal will be to understand the compromised physiology/biochemistry associated with chicks from various aged hens when incubated under similar conditions. These studies are designed to investigate various aspects of lipid metabolism, which are known to be compromised in newly hatched chicks from different aged hens. We have found that chicks from young hens have higher than expected levels of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol when compared to chicks from older hens. This suggests that the metabolism of lipoproteins may be compromised in chicks from young hens. To understand what occurs in circulation, we will investigate the in vivo metabolism of specific apolipoproteins and their particles in the newly hatched chicks from different aged hens.
  • Other research interests include: A) Stress Effects On Lipoproteins; B) Fatty Acid Turnover Studies Using RadioactiveTracers; C) Protein Turnover Studies Using Stable Isotopes;  D) Atherosclerosis and E) Animal Behavior.
