Unit 6 -- Part 4
Bovine Respiratory Disease
J. Nielsen
Factors contributing to bovine respiratory disease (BRD)
- Stress
- Immune suppression/failure of passive transfer
- viruses
-- infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR),
bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), parainfluenza type 3 (PI3), bovine respiratory
syncytial virus (BRSV)
- bacteria -- Pasteurella hemolytica, Haemophilus somnus
Diagnosis
- Careful visual OBSERVATION
- depression, off feed, separation from group, cough, nasal discharge, fever
- blood testing
- necropsy
Prevention
- passive transfer of antibodies (colostrum)
- adequate ventilation
- cleanliness
- vaccination, preconditioning
There will be an in-class viewing of a video illustrating visual observation of
calves with bovine respiratory disease, and management procedures to minimize the disease
complex. There will also be class discussion of a case example of an outbreak of disease
caused by one of the viruses of the respiratory disease complex.
