Introduction to the
National Poultry Improvement Plan Raising chickens, turkeys and other types of poultry--whether done for profit or pleasure--entails undertaking the serious responsibility of disease prevention. NPIPs objective is to provide a cooperative Industry-State-Federal program through which new technology can be effectively applied to the improvement of poultry and poultry products throughout the country. The provisions of the Plan, developed jointly by industry members and State and Federal Officials, establish testing standards and protocols used to monitor and control diseases disseminated through the reproduction process. Exhibition of Birds in the State of Indiana Part of the NPIP program regulates birds exhibited in the state of Indiana. In order to exhibit in Indiana, the birds must come from an NPIP-certified Pullorum-Typhoid clean flock within one year of exhibition or have had a negative Pullorum-Typhoid test within ninety (90) days prior to exhibition. Pullorum-Typhoid blood testing can be completed by sending a two (2) ml sample of blood serum from each bird to an NPIP-approved laboratory, such as Purdue Universitys Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratories in West Lafayette and Dubois, Indiana. http://www.addl.purdue.edu/ Your local veterinarian may draw the blood. Another alternative is to become an NPIP-certified blood tester. This can be accomplished by participating in and successfully completing an NPIP Blood Testing school conducted by the Indiana State Poultry Association. Two schools are held in the spring: one at Purdue University, West Lafayette, and the other at Purdue SIPAC, Dubois, Indiana. NPIP Blood Testing School Certification lasts for three years. To add your name to the Blood Testing School mailing list, please call the office (765-494-8517) or mail this form to our office.Pullorum-Typhoid Antigen
