I am not sure about the breeding habits but as a sport fisherman I have caught numerous mountain mullet from the rivers and small streams of my native island Dominica in the west indies.

I have seen specimens up to aroun two feet long (2lbs weight) although my personal best was just over 12" and weighed around 1lb 2oz.

They give excellent sport (better than trout) on light spinning tackle using small mepps spinners, and often leave the water in arial acrobatics.

The larger specimens are very shy and almost impossible to catch, the best bait often being a bunch of live earthworms or small live frogs.

Mountain mullet as far as i know are omnivorous eating practically anything edible and are perfectly adapted to surviving in the sometimes sterile fast flowing mountain streams which have little vegetation. I have caught mullet on a variety of natural baits and artificial baits.

They do not like still water and die quickly if the holding tank is not well oxygenated.

I would be grateful if you find out more about the species as they are becoming rarer and rarer in Dominica due to overfishing and flash floods caused by rain water run off from farmland where the forest has been destroyed.

They have a slow growth rate and I always put back any fish i catch.

regards ken
