Major Programs
Milker Training. Schools conducted around Indiana since 1997 and
continuing. Workshops are focused on teaching dairy farm employees basics of
anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and milking machine function to help them
develop an understanding of why recommended milking practices ought to be
strictly followed. Goal is to provide overall training not to recommend a single
blanket milking routine to be observed on all farms. The attendance of dairy
professionals will disperse the information to a large number of farms.
Milking for Quality has been developed as an on-line training module for
milkers and is currently available in English and Spanish
(http://www.milkquality.org/).
Milk Quality. Milk quality assurance programs for dairy producers
in response to increasing environmental pressures and decreasing legal limits
for somatic cells in milk. Information on newest concepts in milk quality have
been disseminated through various meetings in Indiana and through the Indiana
Milk Quality Conference held annually in April. Further, Dr. Schutz serves as
vice-President of Dairy Practices Council and has been on its Board of Directors
for 5 years. He has co-authored DPC Guideline #102 Milking Procedures with other
experts in the dairy industry.
Milk Pricing and Using Basic Formula Price Contracts. With current
price uncertainties surrounding the present Federal Milk Marketing Reform
process, producers need to consider ways to hedge future milk prices to protect
themselves from volatile milk price fluctuations. Programs on using BFP
contracts, the Cooperatives Working Together program and updates on the Federal
Milk Marketing Reform process have been made around Indiana. Annually, Dr.
Schutz cooperates with the Agricultural Economics Departemnt to develop the
Dairy Outlook for Indiana.
Indiana Dairy Leadership. The need for a single organization to
represent dairy producers in Indiana was a need indicated by nearly every
University, extension, and dairy producer group that Dr. Schutz met with up
on his arrival at Purdue University. Dr. Schutz began his efforts to unite the
industry initially by leading and coordinating the development of the Dairy
Common Interest Group (CIG) under the structure of the Purdue University
Cooperative Extension Service's Plan of Work in the spring of 1998. Dr. Schutz
envisioned and led development of Indiana Professional Dairy Producers (IPDP),
with support of the Dairy CIG. Dr. Schutz was appointed treasurer of the newly
formed organization, and continues to work with the board of directors to
develop educational opportunities for dairy producers, such as dairy tours and
the first ever Indiana Dairy Conference sponsored jointly by Indiana
Professional Dairy Producers, Indiana State Dairy Association, and several state
breed associations that was attended by 250 dairy producers and industry
professionals in February 2000. That conference continues, and will be held in
2008 in conjunction with Indiana Beef cattle Association and Indiana Forage
Council as the Indiana Cattle and Forage Symposium. Dr. Schutz also serves as an
advisor to the Board of Directors of the Indiana State Dairy Association,
Indiana Dairy Industry Development Board, and Milk Promotion Services of
Indiana. He represents Purdue at the Farm Bureau Dairy Advisory Committee
meetings.
